Before you start (Mac only): if this is the first time an AJA device has been connected to this laptop, macOS will likely block the driver. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and look for a message allowing AJA software - click Allow. If you don't do this first, the U-Tap may fail to connect even after installing the updater.
- Download the AJA U-Tap SDI Updater for Mac or Windows from the AJA support page.
- Install and open the updater, then connect your AJA U-Tap via USB.
- In the updater, click "Scan for U-TAPs."
- You should see a confirmation message that your U-Tap has been connected.
- Unplug and re-plug the USB cable from the AJA device. The status light next to "Status" should now blink green.
- Close the AJA Updater application. The video feed will not pass through to Focus/Focus Server while the updater is open - this step is easy to miss and is the most common reason the feed doesn't show up.
- Open Focus Server - the U-Tap should now show as "Ready."
-
If the feed still isn't available in Focus Server, test it independently in VLC:
- Open VLC > File > Open Capture Device
- Select the U-Tap as both the video device and audio device
- If the feed appears in VLC but not Focus Server, the issue is likely with Focus Server's device selection rather than the U-Tap itself - check that the correct capture device is selected there.
- If the feed does not appear in VLC either, repeat steps 3–6 (rescan, unplug/replug, close the updater) or try a different USB port/cable.
